Francine Busby is running in the Special Election in North San Diego County on April 11th. She is running to replace Republican Congressman Duke Cunningham, who was discredited and had to resign when faced with criminal indictments for bribery and influence peddling. This "Culture of Corruption" must be ended and grassroots efforts will help Get the Vote Out in this early election. VGFD is joing with other groups in the LA area to send buses or vans filled with volunteers to canvass for Busby on Saturday, March 18th. We are finalizing the details, but we will be leaving from a central place in the Valley and heading down together. The exact meeting location and time are TBA but plan on spending the entire day on this great way to help take back the House. Please RSVP by Wednesday, March 15.

FRANCINE BUSBY CAN WIN DUKE CUNNINGHAM’S CONGRESSIONAL SEAT IN SAN DIEGO ON APRIL 11th WITH OUR HELP! Recent polling shows that Francine Busby is close to winning an outright majority in order to avoid a run-off election. She needs our help now to take her over the top! Valley Grassroots for Democracy has committed to bringing out volunteers to help take control of this Republican Congressional seat. This Sunday, April 9th, we can help make this happen. Gather again with old friends and make new ones to turn the tide away from Bush and the repressive right wing idealogues. VGFD will be sponsoring vans leaving from from Burbank heading to beautiful Cardiff by the Sea to change history. We'll be meeting at 7:00. (Please note updated time!) Join us as we walk door-to-door or make phone calls to voters. We will work from about noon to five, and then head back to the Valley. Don’t forget: * Comfortable footwear and sun-block If you feel like driving yourself, here’s the meeting place where we will be at noon. It's about a two-hour drive from the Valley. See you on April 9th!

Determined to help keep spirits high among U.S. military personnel serving in Iraq, the Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley and a number of its member clubs will hold their third annual troop package assembly event Saturday, April 15, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at area two of Woodley Park, near Burbank Blvd. and Woodley Avenue in the central San Fernando Valley. Valley residents interested in supporting the effort are welcome at the event, where they can pack boxes and write personal letters to the recipients, donate goods for shipment, and help pay the cost of overseas postage, which is estimated at $10 per box. “Our members believe that it’s important, not just to keep American troops in Iraq supplied with things that might make their lives a little easier, but also to let them know that, whatever our feelings about Bush Administration policy in Iraq, we fully support our troops wherever they serve, and wish them a safe and speedy return home,” explained DP/SFV 1st vice chair Agi Kessler. “Because of the high cost of shipping overseas,” she added, “many troops never get packages from home. We’re trying to let them know that everyone back home is thinking about them and concerned about their well-being, just as their families are.” Included on the list of items needed for shipment are trail mix; beef jerky; hard candy; powdered Gatorade, tea or KoolAid; tea bags; individually wrapped cookies and snack cakes; Tang; granola bars; chips; nuts; microwave popcorn; ramen noodles; tuna in pouches; gum; gel pens; magazines; crossword puzzles; Frisbees; small board games; DVDs and CDs; TV show tapes; AA batteries; jump ropes; baseballs and baseball caps; bandanas; socks; lotion, small Kleenex packets; baby wipes; feminine products; and hand sanitizer. “We’d also welcome military phone cards,” Kessler added, “since our troops must pay to place calls home and the cost can be prohibitive. To be sure the cards you contribute can be used in Iraq, go to valleygrassroots.com and click on the “Democracy Store” button for speedypin.com.” Donors are cautioned not to bring any alcohol, pork or tobacco products, pornography, hard-bound books, bulk-packed items, food in heavy cans or boxes, or domestic calling cards. All volunteers will enjoy a barbeque lunch. Valley area Democratic clubs participating in the event and contributing to the cost of shipping troop packages include Valley Grassroots for Democracy, North Valley Democratic Club, Sherman Oaks Democratic Club, San Fernando Valley Young Democrats, Valley West Democratic Club, Kitchen Table Democracy, Valley Dems United, Stonewall Young Dems and Topanga Democratic Club.
