WHAT: Join Peace and Media Activists from Across Los Angeles As We Put the New Publisher on Notice Picket LA Times/Protest the Firing of Columnist Robert Scheer & Limited Coverage of Local Anti-War Movement
WHEN: Tuesday, Nov. 15 at Noon
WHERE: Outside, LA Times Building
First Street Entrance
202 W. 1st St. (at Spring St.)
Los Angeles, CA 90012
WHY: Last Friday, LA Times Publisher Jeff Johnson fired Robert Scheer who had worked there for 30 years, the last 12 years as a weekly columnist.
A delegation will also demand a meeting with publisher Jeff Johnson, who reportedly has privately told people that he hated every word that Scheer wrote. We want to read full-spectrum of voices in the LA Times and know that our daily newspaper will fully cover the anti-war movement in Los Angeles.
Fax a letter or e-mail letter of protest against the firing and consider joining a campaign with hundreds of readers canceling their subscription to the LA Times:

Valley Grassroots for Democracy members and friends are urged to join us on Saturday, November 19, when we help put the finishing touches on several Habitat for Humanity homes in Pacoima. You will be working along side both building trades professionals and the owners of the homes.
You do not need any experience! You do not need to stay the whole day but we will need you especially in the morning from 7:45AM until 11:45 AM when we eat lunch (provided by Valley Grassroots for Democracy). You must be at least sixteen years old but there is no age maximum.
So far we have only seven volunteers--we need at least eight more!
For more information and to RSVP, please contact Tauby Ross at rosstauby@yahoo.com or 818-212-9233. She will send you a detailed sheet including directions to the work site. There is plenty of secure parking available.
Wednesday December 7, 2005
Start: 7:00 pm
End: 9:00 pm
Conny McCormack, Los Angeles County's Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, will be our special guest at our Wednesday, Dec. 7 meeting. Ms. McCormack is the top election official in the county, responsible for conducting elections for the largest electoral jurisdiction in the U.S., with over 4 million registered voters and 5,000 voting precincts.
Ms. McCormack's focus will be on the security of electronic voting systems--can they be hacked? can they be mis-programmed by mistake or intentionally? do they have a paper trail so they can be audited? Our fears, based on what we hear from Ohio and other states, is that electronic voting may undermine the fairness and accuracy of the vote. Tales of voters touching the screen to vote Kerry but finding that Bush came up as the selection make up our worst nightmare.
Ms. McCormack will make about a 20-minute presentation, to be followed by a 30-minute Q&A. We will ask our members to submit questions ahead of time so we can eliminate redundant questions and do the Q&A in the most logical order.
Because of limited space, please RSVP right away to reserve space for this event. Once the room fills up then we will have to cut off RSVPs. (If you have already RSVP'd please don't do it again!)
While there's no admission charge, we ask all who attend to bring one or two canned goods and/or cash which will be donated to the food bank at the AIDS Service Center of Pasadena.
Please RSVP by sending an email to rsvp@valleygrassrootsfordemocracy.com. You may also email your questions to the same address.
